(June 22, Slider’s) Lockwood “comes from having lived in the place called Lockwood that was in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The surname Lockwood is a habitation name that was originally derived from the Old English words loca and wudu, meaning enclosure and wood. Therefore the original bearers of the surname lived in or near a forest in Yorkshire.” - www.houseofnames.com

When Steve Lockwood took to the stage last month it was my first time catching his gig, despite having several band/friends in common, and it was also my maiden voyage to Slider’s the new venue that took over Big Daddy’s BBQ on North Lombard. I think it was a Pietro’s Pizza before that, candy stripes and all.

Lockwood’s act has been encouraged upon me by many in the local scene: Scotland Barr, The Lonesomes, etc.

I wasn’t let down. Lockwood has a soulful, plaintive, howling sound, that emotionally charges his vocals and lyrics. Paired with his acoustic-rock guitar style, along with his band-mate, Jeff-something, you get something that sounds a little like John Doe (of X fame), only prettier.
