As I'm sure the Doc knows well (and I'm very surprised you don't), Knockando is a Scots whisky, named for the Banff village that's home to the distillery. Cnoc-an-dhu is gaelic for 'little black hill' and shows the correct pronunciation pretty well; the 'knock' rhymes with 'Snock'! But the idiomatic English 'No can do' is a nice touch anyway.
Thanks for an interesting review; I was particularly pleased when this came out on vinyl, and not only for the great Boone image on the back cover that doesn't make it to the CD package.
I must say though that I prefer the Armchair Boogie version of Light Green Fellow to the one on offer here.

This is from Phil Favorite of The Lonesomes:

PHILLY’S FAVORITES OF 2007

Hey y'all,

Phil here, just chiming in to say Happy New Year. We Lonesomes have been chillin' since our year-ending show at Mt. Tabor Legacy here in P-town. Thanks to all who came out to support us this year, our best yet. Lots of great shows and great fun. Really looking forward to playing for you all in '08.

Since we normally post a "What We're Listing To" blog quarterly here at MySpace, I thought it might be fun to clue you in on my favorite 10 albums of the year. For the record, I listen to a lot of new music but not nearly enough to feel complete, especially around this time of year when everybody's posting their faves from the year. It's an ongoing process, and catching up to last year's best stuff is a ritual for the early part of every new year.

For example, my sister Mary Beth got me the new Patti Griffin for Christmas and it's mezmorizing. Mark Z. from the band was playing me the new Springsteen in his truck on our way back from fishing yesterday and that sounded amazing. And Robyn the drummer made me a copy of the Betty Lavette record from last year that's earning big kudos, but I haven't had a chance to sink my teeth in yet. So you see . . .

On the buying front, there are always some I take a pass on and regret. I never could quite commit to the new Dinosaur Jr. record though my rich history with the band warranted at least a little love. Alas, it showed up in Pitchfork's top 10 for the year, and I still haven't heard it.

As usual, I bought a ton of vinyl this year and was loving the movement toward free downloads, led by the indie labels. Let's hope the majors pick up on the trend in 2008.

And I should mention that living in Portland, there are just so many amazing local artists who put out great records this year that I could never hear them all or give them the credit they deserve. Last week, our local weekly, Willamette Week, did a piece on the best local releases and it must have covered 30 records. Many of those I heard and truly enjoyed, but I'll skip 'em for my best of list; hard to qualify those records against the giants of indie rock..

Anyways, without further adieu, and with apologies to Spoon, Okkervil River, Lifesavas, the New Pornographers, the Fiery Furncaces, Wilco, Son Volt and especially Band of Horses, here's my favorites of 2007:

1. The National, Boxer: This record got stronger the more I played it, never got old, and kept revealing cool moments with repeated plays. Really, really strong songwriting, beautifully presented by the band. And I love that Matt dude's voice. Favorite song: Ada

2. Mark Olson, Salavation Blues: Nobody twists a phrase or melody like this man; a welcome return to the studio and a nice break from the Creekdippers stuff with some standard instrumentation. These songs get under the skin and into the veins. Glorious. Favorite song: National Express

3. Jason Isbell, Sirens of the Ditch: Years in the making, this debut solo effort from the former DBT exhibits the young man's extraordinary songwriting skills and enormous musical talent. Not quite note perfect, but for a debut, simply stunning. Favorite song: Grown

4. Ryan Adams, Easy Tiger: Let it be known that I loved the two Cardinals records from 2005, so I don't consider this some return to form. It's simply another stellar effort by the the freshly clean-and-sober whipping boy of alt-country. Favorite song: Everybody Knows

5. Iron and Wine, The Shepherd's Dog:: Though I had a hunch I would love this record, since I love everything Sam Beam has done so far, this effort had him painting with new colors and striking true chords throughout. Favorite song: Resurrection Fern

6. The Sadies, New Seasons: Produced by Gary Louris, I was expecting this to sound glossy and poppy like a late-model Jayhawks record. Instead, the record is true to the Sadies sound and probably their best collection of tunes since 2001's Tremendous Efforts. A tremendous effort indeed. Favorite song: The Trial.

7. Arcade Fire, Neon Bible: No matter which weird way they dressed these songs up, at the root of each is a dude with his guitar, and the dude is a great songwriter. This record had me transfixed for about six weeks. Favorite song: (Antichrist Television Blues)

8.The Shins, Wincing the Night Away: This came out last year, right? Early-in-the-year release still holds its fine form into early 2008. Well worth the long wait since the last record. Favorite song: Turn On Me

9. White Stripes, Icky Thump: Listening to this, I can't help but picture Jack White flying around the studio, tracking crazy parts and mixing them in a frantic rush to see how fast he can make a great album. Three weeks, I'm told. Awesome. Favorite song: You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You're Told)

10. Richmond Fontaine, Thirteen Cities: Also released last January, this record sort of got lost in the mix of year-end bests, especially since it came out in Europe in late 2006. The usual amazing stuff from Portland's best band. Favorite Song: The Kid from Belmont Street.

Best Concert of the Year
My Morning Jacket at Crystal Ballroom in January: Simply put, this is the best show I've seen in the millennium. As a field trip, our band went together and all we could say was, "Wow!"
Honorable mention: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at Dante's in August and North Twin at Dante's in November.

That's it for now, folks. Who got left out? Chime in with your recommendations.

Thanks for posting this, Josh... want to let every one know this is a free show, although we will have CD's for sale and tip jar to pass around- we are trying to raise the funds to bring our backup musicians with us.

We could NOT have done this without the support of you and everyone who voted and cajoled their friends, neighbors and co-workers into voting too.

Don't forget to watch the finals at www.famecast.com. Amanda on July 23, Lisa on July 24. Then voting opens for about a week- we need your votes then! Also check out local filmmakers Cinema Syndicate in the short film category. Help us represent Portland in the music Mecca, Austin, TX!

Hmmm. I wonder if anyone out there can help me with this trivia question...

As for your podcast problem: right-click on the link, then select Save File As (or something similar) and pick where you want to save it, then it should start downloading.

Let me know if that does it, OK?

Thanks

Josh,

Sorry I didn't get a chance to say hey at the Duff's gig. Trivia: Berg recorded my CD, too. Problem here: I can only stream, can't download podcast. Is it a Mac/PC thing?
